Minnesota Tax Conference

Had a great day yesterday with the attendees at the Minnesota CPA Society annual tax conference.

There were over 1500 in attendance and they had a Twitter hash tag. Guess what? Only about a dozen or so were tweeting and several of those were vendors or speakers (like me).

If you are a CPA firm partner or manager and are still procrastinating on setting up a Twitter account, do it now before you get into busy season again.

Here’s my recommendation to CPA newbies to Twitter:

  • Sign-up for an account. You must have an account to be able to “follow” others.
  • Decide on a FEW people or organizations you want to follow.
  • I suggest a few CPA profession people, a couple of news sources and maybe one or two just for fun.
  • Then, just read their tweets – you don’t have to tweet anything yourself until you get more comfortable.
  • Eventually, use a tool like TweetDeck or HootSuite to manage your social media.

Here is a link to Twitter basics to help you get started.

Here’s a few suggestions on who you might try following:

@cpamanagement (that’s me, of course)

@CPALetter_Daily (AICPA)

@iShade (online site for the accounting profession)

@FastCompany (the cool business magazine)

@MNCPATweet (Minnesota Society)

@tomhood (CEO of Maryland Association of CPAs)

Don’t you just love the Minnesota Society Staffer’s T-shirt (pictured above)?  CPAs DO put the fun in refund. Thank-you, Minnesota Society for making me part of your event.

Just for fun, visit the MNCPA About Our Staff page and see what they have done. Your clients would enjoy something like this about your firm’s team.

  • "Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game. "
  • Michael Jordan
