Implement, Take Action, Do Things…. Embrace A Sense of Urgency

April has arrived. CPAs and their team members are in the final stretch of Spring tax season. This is when I begin to worry.

I worry that CPAs in firms across the country will go into their two to three week coma…. wandering around with that dazed look because they have (or think they have) worked way too hard during the first 3.5 months of the year.

The battle cry will be going out inside these firms….

  • “Let’s wait a while.”
  • “I’m just too tired to tackle that project right now.”
  • “I need some rest.”
  • “I’m going to be on vacation, we’ll do it later.

Wouldn’t it be great to be on the list of the Top 10 Fastest Growing Firms? You don’t get there by procrastinating, by delaying, by waiting until you feel rested. You get there by doing things.

I often refer to Herb Kellehers quote when he was asked if they had a strategic plan. His reply, “We have a strategic plan. It’s called Doing Things.”

Planning is one thing. Many CPA firm are great at it. However, as a partner (a business leader) you have more to do than plan. Here’s a slide I use in my presentations to CPA firm leaders:

Execution is the job

  • "It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory."
  • W. Edwards Deming
