M B W A – Manage By Wandering Around.

Have you heard of this term? I first heard of it when I read the 1982 best selling book In Search of Excellence by Tom Peters and Robert H. Waterman. During their research for the book they visited Hewlett-Packard and learned of the practice (MBWA) that was used by the executives of the company.

This is such an important practice for CPA firm partners and managers. It is about making yourself visible and available to your employees.

Here’s what I suggest for CPA firm leaders – – Going to the break room to get coffee? Going to the restroom? Going to the mailroom to pick up your mail? On the way back to your office, take the long way back, walk around the entire floor or office space, stopping briefly to ask individuals, “How’s it going? Do you need anything from me?”

Many CPA firm team members tell me that their work is often stalled because they are waiting on a partner to answer a question. They tell me they try to stop by a partner’s office to ask a question and they are always on the phone or the door is closed.

It’s time to quit hiding from your own people. It’s time to speed up the workflow in your office. It’s time to communicate with people. It’s time to simply recognize people.

Make MBWA a habit.
